Gauteng Health Tackles Medical Negligence and Financial Misconduct Concerns

Pretoria: The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has announced initiatives to address public concerns about its handling of disciplinary processes related to medical negligence and financial misconduct within its healthcare facilities. The department's statement aims to clarify its internal accountability mechanisms in response to these issues.

According to South African Government News Agency, the department emphasized that disciplinary actions have been taken in all cases where there was sufficient evidence to proceed. The outcomes of these actions have been executed in accordance with labor legislation, public service regulations, and the applicable legal frameworks. The department is currently reviewing cases of medical negligence involving healthcare professionals, including those of former employees, to assess whether they should be referred to relevant professional councils for further investigation.

In terms of financial misconduct, the GDoH revealed that criminal cases have been initiated, and investigations are actively ongoing. The department is also considering available mechanisms for recovering losses sustained by the State, provided there is supporting evidence.

The department acknowledged the ongoing need to strengthen accountability mechanisms and consequence management processes. It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public resources, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining high standards of governance and professional conduct. In its closing remarks, the department assured continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies, professional councils, and other oversight bodies in investigating professional misconduct, financial irregularities, and governance failures as needed.
