Gauteng Reassures Public on e-Panic Button Security

Pretoria:Gauteng: The Gauteng Department of e-Government has reassured residents that the e-Panic Button mobile application is secure, following media reports about potential information security risks. The department confirmed that an attempted security breach was detected but swiftly addressed, ensuring no personal information was compromised.

According to South African Government News Agency, the incident involved a highly specialized organization skilled in cybersecurity. MEC for e-Government Bonginkosi Dhlamini emphasized the importance of system security and the protection of personal information, noting that vulnerabilities were promptly identified and addressed by technical teams. Additional testing and verification have been requested to ensure all security requirements are met, highlighting that cybersecurity is a continuous process.

Residents, particularly those in townships and underserved areas, are encouraged to download and use the e-Panic Button application. This platform is designed to connect users to emergency assistance swiftly during crises. The application is part of the government's commitment to using technology to enhance public safety and improve access to emergency services.

The app allows users to request emergency assistance for incidents like criminal activities, medical emergencies, gender-based violence, and fires. It provides an essential channel for accessing help, especially in areas where traditional services may be less accessible.

To date, the platform boasts 288,307 active users, 114,414 emergency call-outs, and has assisted 27,929 citizens, saving 12,051 lives, with 59,394 crimes reported and an average response time of 15 minutes and 57 seconds. These statistics demonstrate the significant role technology plays in enhancing public safety.

The department plans to continue collaborating with law enforcement and emergency response agencies to integrate the e-Panic Button into the broader public safety ecosystem. Dhlamini reiterated the platform's focus on user trust and data security, affirming ongoing efforts to test, improve, and strengthen the system to protect both residents and the technology's integrity.
