GDE Condemns Alleged Assault by Seven Girl Learners on Fellow Pupil

Bedfordview: The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has expressed deep concern at a recent incident where a group of seven girl learners from Bedfordview High School, Kensington High School, Queens High School, and Phoenix College allegedly assaulted a fellow Bedfordview High girl learner in Yeoville. The incident reportedly took place on Saturday, 10 May 2025.

According to South African Government News Agency, the victim reported the matter to the school on Monday, 12 May 2025, alleging that the group attack occurred at a residence in Yeoville where the learners live. A video capturing the assault went viral on social media. The perpetrators include four learners from Bedfordview High School, one from Queens High School, one from Kensington High School, and one from Phoenix College.

All implicated learners were suspended by their respective schools and appeared at the Magistrates Court on Monday, 19 May 2025, facing charges of common assault. The schools have initiated internal investigations in line with their codes of conduct and disciplinary procedures.

Psycho-social support will be provided to all affected learners, including the victim. The GDE condemns such acts of violence, emphasizing that it is unacceptable and will have serious consequences for learners’ education and future prospects. The department prioritizes creating safe, respectful, and supportive learning environments.

The GDE urged parents and guardians to actively shape the values and conduct of their children, stressing that building a non-violent society begins at home. Collaboration between parents, schools, and the department is vital to instilling discipline and respect for educational institutions.

The department encourages learners to speak out against bullying and violence. Reporting incidents to a trusted teacher, school leadership, parents, or GDE district offices is essential. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) and Childline South Africa offer free, confidential support available 24/7. Incidents can also be reported to the GDE via WhatsApp or the GDE Contact Centre.
