Operation Vala Umgodi Leads to Arrest of Nine in Barberton for Immigration Violations and Precious Metal Possession


Barberton: Operation Vala Umgodi in Mpumalanga led to the arrest of nine suspects on 16 May 2025 in the Barberton area. Amongst the arrested suspects, seven were found to be undocumented foreign nationals, while two were found in possession of precious metal.



According to South African Police Service, the operation focused on curbing illegal mining activities in the Mpumalanga province. The team conducted stop-and-search operations along the R38 road in Barberton, where they intercepted a black BMW with Gauteng registration. A search of the vehicle revealed illicit mining equipment, including jackhammers, a block of precious metal, a chisel, and a bottle of mercury.



The suspects were apprehended, and the vehicle along with the equipment was confiscated. The individuals, aged between 20 and 49, are scheduled to appear at the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on 19 May 2025, facing charges related to the Contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa and possession of precious metal.



Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, welcomed the arrests. He emphasized the ongoing commitment of law enforcement agencies to eradicate illegal mining activities, reassuring the public that further successes are anticipated as the operation continues to intensify.
