Presidency Condemns Democratic Alliance’s Alleged Harassment of Special Envoy

Pretoria: The Presidency has issued a strong condemnation against what it describes as the Democratic Alliance's (DA) attempts to harass and undermine Presidential Envoy Mcebisi Jonas. The Presidency has urged the nation to disregard the DA's disinformation regarding international relations and diplomacy as these do not reflect official Government policy.

According to African Press Organization, the Democratic Alliance has alleged that the United States has rejected Mr. Jonas's credentials, impeding his role as Special Envoy to North America. The DA further suggests that this situation compounds a crisis involving looming U.S. trade tariffs, previously announced by President Donald Trump.

Mr. Jonas has been actively collaborating with the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC) to develop trade proposals aimed at engaging the United States on favorable terms. Additionally, he has been instrumental in assisting the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) to strengthen diplomatic relations between South Africa and the United States.

In light of ongoing diplomatic processes and President Ramaphosa's recent communications with President Trump, including a Working Visit to Washington scheduled for May 2025, there has been no urgent requirement for Mr. Jonas to travel to the United States. The Presidency is concerned about the DA's continued campaign against South Africa's national interests, which it perceives as an effort to embarrass and belittle the country and Mr. Jonas specifically.

The DA’s actions, including a visit to the United States earlier this year, are seen by the Presidency as an attempt to advance an ideological agenda rather than prioritizing national interests. The DA is accused of aligning with right-wing factions seeking to leverage foreign influence to alter South Africa's policies.

Furthermore, the DA is reportedly exploiting the critical engagement between South Africa and the United States in response to President Ramaphosa's decision to remove Mr. Andrew Whitfield from the Deputy Minister position of Trade, Industry, and Competition. The Presidency warns that the DA's stance could jeopardize South Africa's international relations and economic prospects, affecting businesses and livelihoods reliant on global trade.
