South Africa: IR Committee Chairperson Unavailable for Interviews Amid National Security Allegations

Pretoria: The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, has declined media interview requests following a media briefing by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Media inquiries have focused on his past removal as Premier of the North West Province.

According to African Press Organization, Mr Mahumapelo cited his role as a Member of Parliament as a reason for his unavailability, noting that Parliament has specific processes and procedures. These procedures involve the Portfolio Committee on Police, the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, and the Standing Committee on Intelligence, especially concerning national security allegations.

In addition, Mr Mahumapelo is engaged in legal proceedings at the North West High Court in Mafikeng, where he is pursuing a defamation case against the Revolutionary Council and three others. He has reported receiving threats linked to his political position, alleging potential harm if he did not vacate his post. These threats, he claims, are due to political interference, with evidence to be presented to the relevant committees as necessary.
