Tshwane: The Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) is not only curbing youth unemployment but reshaping labour market access for South Africa’s most excluded youth, with government now working to elevate the programme to new heights. President Cyril Ramaphosa witnessed the impact of the programme on Tuesday when he visited the Sefako Makgatho Primary School in Saulsville, Tshwane, to interact directly with beneficiaries, educators, and learners.
According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the significant role it plays in education and the development of young South Africans. He acknowledged the socio-economic challenges faced by the youth and emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding opportunities. The President noted that the BEEI has successfully employed over two million young individuals since its inception, covering more than 25,000 schools nationwide.
The initiative not only provides employment but also develops essential skills such as discipline, management, and interpersonal abilities among participants. These skills are vital for future employment success. President Ramaphosa praised the programme’s execution and its potential to inspire similar initiatives globally. He stressed the importance of the programme in making young participants job-ready and enhancing their opportunities for future employment.
Two young teacher assistants, Joshua Given Machete and Valria Ndleve, shared their positive experiences with the programme. Machete, employed as a curriculum assistant, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and highlighted the economic impact it has had on his life. Ndleve, an education assistant, emphasized the financial stability and professional experience gained through the initiative.
The BEEI, a flagship programme of the Presidential Employment Stimulus (PES), aims to address youth unemployment and support the basic education system by placing young people in roles within public schools. The programme is implemented by the Department of Basic Education and administered by the Industrial Development Corporation.
President Ramaphosa’s visit is part of his engagement with youth beneficiaries of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention (PYEI) and Presidential Employment Stimulus (PES) flagship programmes in Pretoria. His itinerary included visits to the South African Creative Industries Incubator in Eersterust and the Foundation for Professional Development in Pretoria East.
