Pretoria: South Africa marks the first anniversary of its Government of National Unity (GNU), a significant milestone following the 2024 National and Provincial Elections that resulted in no party securing an outright majority. Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, highlighted the swift formation of a government within 14 days, an achievement that contrasts with the extended periods taken by some developed nations in similar situations.
According to South African Government News Agency, Ntshavheni briefed the media after a Cabinet meeting, emphasizing the GNU’s commitment to stability, collaboration, and inclusive governance. This historic coalition, comprising 10 political parties, prioritizes the needs of South Africa and its citizens, promoting unity and shared purpose despite diverse ideological perspectives.
Last year, President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed his new Cabinet, describing the GNU’s formation as unprecedented in the country’s democratic history. He stressed the importance of advancing national interests while respecting the election outcomes and leveraging the capabilities of each party involved.
The President further noted that all parties in the GNU pledged to uphold the Constitution, ensure accountable and transparent governance, and support evidence-based policy-making. They are also committed to professionalizing the public service and maintaining integrity and good governance.
