Suspect facing fraud charges

WESTERN CAPE – An investigation by the Western Cape Commercial Crimes Unit led to the arrest of a suspect this morning who defrauded her employer, a national retail clothing company. The 47-year-old female who worked in the payroll department was responsible for payments including salaries and also handled petty cash. She made numerous fraudulent payments into her daughter’s bank account, while she also embezzled petty cash funds and misappropriated a total of R262 111-23 of company funds before she was caught.

The suspect made her court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s court this morning and was granted bail with conditions.

Engcobo SAPS involves youth in the fight against crime

ENGCOBO – As part of Youth Day Celebrations, Engcobo SAPS organised Station Commander’s Cup soccer tournament where a number of teams were invited to participate. The initiative, which aimed at engaging youth, took place at Engcobo Village Sports Fields in Engcobo on Thursday, 16 June 2022.

The event was preceded by Crime Awareness Event that was honoured by a number of stakeholders, including Mayoral Office, Religious Fraternity, Traditional Leadership and Youth structures. Youth of Ngcobo and surroundings was engaged and addressed by different authorities who were in attendance, with an aim of ensuring collective efforts in ensuring safety in every corner of the society.

Engcobo Station Commander, Colonel Xolani Sali described the initiative as a workable strategy to engage youth in the fight against crime. He called upon youth to play their critical role in ensuring safety in their own respective environments, as criminality is a worrying concern. “We hereby invite everybody, especially youth yo join hands in the fight against crime, as fighting crime is everybody’s responsibility. Together we can fight crime effectively,” he said.

Chris Hani Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Zuziwe Magqashela appreciated presence and support of different stakeholders, as she felt that everyone has a role to play in fighting crime, and dealing with moral decay in different societies.

Mayor of Dr. AB Xuma (former Engcobo) Local Municipality, Councillor Siyabulela Zangqa appreciated the collective efforts in ensuring harmony in every society. He emphasised the role of community, especially youth, in the fight against crime. “Everyone has a role to play in ensuring effective policing in every sphere of society. Crime is a societal matter, we therefore cannot let the police fight crime alone, while crime is committed in our communities, especially households,” he said.

Councillor Zangqa further characterised discipline and education as primary tools to change and shape the society. “Discipline is critical on and off the field, so that we can change attitudes in our society. I humbly urge you to take education seriously, in an effort to positively shape, innovate and transform every system in our communities,” he concluded.

Suspect in court for possession of unlicensed firearm

WESTERN CAPE– One suspect was arrested by the Bellville Hawks` Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, Crime Intelligence and Franschoek Vispol yesterday, for possession of unlicensed firearm.

His arrest comes after information was received about one of the robbers from a cash in transit at Franschoek on 15 June 2022 that dropped a firearm whilst fleeing the scene.

After thorough investigation, it was discovered that the firearm was picked up by one of the bystanders. Through investigation conducted the firearm was recovered and one suspect aged 46 was arrested.

The suspect was charged accordingly and is due to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court today, facing a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm.

Minister Angie Motshekga to commemorate Youth Month at Laban Motlhabi Comprehensive School in Kwa-Thema, Springs

The Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga, will on Saturday, 18 June 2022 address the commemorative event to mark Youth Month at Laban Motlhabi Comprehensive School in Kwa-Thema, Springs, Gauteng.

Every year the department engages in commemorative activities to highlight national days, historic anniversaries and significant events. These events form part of an integrated approach by Basic Education sector to the realisation of social cohesion and nation building.

The Youth Day commemoration event at Laban Motlhabi Comprehensive is also part of the Ministerial Roadshows aimed promoting the sector’s key interventions such as the newly adopted Early Childhood Development (ECD) function, Matric Second Chance Programme and other collaborative effort to end violence against children, bullying, discrimination and gender-based violence.
