Anti-bullying campaign held at Concordia Primary School

On Monday, 30 May 2022 the Springbok Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit in partnership with different Government Departments and stakeholders within the Namakwa District held an anti-bullying awareness campaign at the Concordia Primary school.

Approximately 80 scholars attended the event and information was shared by the different speakers in an attempt to create awareness about the different forms of bullying and the process to be followed when reporting such incidents.

This multi-disciplinary event was supported by the Thutuzela Care Centre of Springbok, the NPA, Department of Education and Department Social Development.

In conclusion the scholars were encouraged to report any form of abuse to the school and also promised that it will be handled with the strictest of confidence.

The anti-bullying campaign forms part of the child protection week currently being observed under the theme, Let us all Protect our Children during Covid-19 and beyond.

Corruption accused sentenced to four years imprisonment

POTCHEFSTROOM – The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena welcomed four years imprisonment sentence handed down to Keromang Bikiri Serape (41) by the Bloemhof Regional Court on Thursday, 26 May 2022, on two counts of corruption.

The sentencing stems from an incident wherein Serape tried in January 2020 to bribe the complainant to withdraw a case docket. It came out during the proceedings that on Tuesday morning, 21 January 2021, the Investigating Officer visited assault case complainant who informed him that there was a certain lady who wanted him to withdraw the case against the leader of the group that was causing disruptions around Bloemhof, in exchange for payment. Moreover, the victim told the police that whenever he meets with the lady, she will block the road for him and persisted that he withdraws the case.

As a result, a case was registered with the police and investigated. Serape was consequently found guilty on Thursday, 26 May 2022, on two counts of corruption and was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment term or R10 000.00 fine that must be paid not later than Monday, 31 October 2022 at 16:00. Furthermore, the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000).

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena lauded the Investigating Officers, Detective Warrant Officer Thabo Rakate and Detective Sergeant Welile Tyukatha of the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit for a sterling job and securing this sentence. He said this conviction will serve as a deterrent to all those who still think they can buy their way out after committing crimes.

Police arrest a gang of bogus cops suspected of hijackings and robberies

A gang that is suspected to be responsible for car hijackings and armed robberies around Gauteng was arrested in Lanseria on Sunday, 29 May 2022 after they were found with unlicensed firearms, ammunition and police uniform. The suspects aged between 26 and 36, are linked with various cases where victims are robbed and hijacked by people wearing police uniforms.

Members of Crime Intelligence gathered information about suspects that wait at a petrol station to prey on unsuspecting motorists and subsequently hijack and rob them at gun point. Information on the planned hijacking that was to happen on Sunday night was shared with the operatives.

A team comprising of members from SAPS Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Crime Intelligence, West Rand Flying Squad, Tracker Connect, Vision Tactical, Guardmax Security, and BCI Security came together to intercept the suspects.

As the team was keeping a close observation, they spotted a blue Mazda that matched the description of the suspects’ vehicle and followed it until it stopped at the petrol station in Lanseria. Upon searching the five occupants and the car, police found two unlicensed firearms (a shotgun and pistol), ammunition, and police uniform. Suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, impersonating police officers, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has praised the collaboration between the police and private security companies through the Eyes and Ears project as they continue to squeeze the space for criminals.

The suspects are expected to appear before Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 31 May 2022.

Provincial Commissioner commends members of tracking team for persistence in tackling crimes related to illicit cigarettes

POLOKWANE – A well-coordinated operation conducted by members of the Provincial Tracking Team and Crime Intelligence, led to the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect, in the early hours of Thursday 26 May 2022 at Ga-Maja Moshate in Lebowakgomo policing area for allegedly dealing in and possession of illicit cigarettes.

The Team operationalised the information received about the presence of a warehouse that is being used to store illicit cigarettes before they are distributed to other places. The information led the members to a certain premises at the said village which turned out to be a shop. On arrival, they searched the place and found 27 boxes containing RG illicit cigarettes worth R315 000.00.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the members of this Team for their determination and persistence in the fight against crime, especially the numerous arrests that they continue to make of suspects involved in smuggling, dealing and possession of illicit cigarettes.

The suspect, who had reportedly rented the shop, was found sleeping inside and immediately arrested. He will appear before Lebowakgomo magistrate’s court soon facing charges of dealing in and possession of illicit cigarettes.

Suspect appears in court for at least 8 bank robberies in Cape Town

WESTERN CAPE –Sinako Magi (32), who has been connected to a spate of eight (8) bank robberies across Cape Town briefly appeared in the Bellville Magistrates Court today, 30 May 2022.

This comes after his arrest by the members of the Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes (NPVC) in Bellvile who identified the suspect and arrested him in the Khayelitsha area at on Friday, 27 May 2022.

It is reported that the accused would walk into a bank and demand cash. The accused has been charged with armed robbery. The robberies date back to November 2021.

Magi is alleged to have robbed Standard Bank and Absa Banks in Bellville, Gugulethu, Elsiesriver, Keinvlei and Kuilsriver areas from the period between November 2021 to March 2022. The accused remains in custody and the matter is remanded to the 06 June 2022 for legal representative.

Police appeal to members of the community in locating 14-year-old Lungile Wandile Shezi after he reportedly left home with his friend at on 28 May 2022.

He was wearing a black track top, maroon track bottom and yellow sandals.
